The Plume Garden was drawn from the ornamental gardens of South and Southeast Asia — where peacocks move through botanical abundance as if the whole garden was arranged for their arrival, and perhaps it was.
We drew the peacock large because the wide-leg pant is the only canvas that does it justice. Too small and it becomes a pattern. At this scale it becomes a presence — the tail feathers travelling the full length of the leg, the peonies and blue florals pressing close around it without crowding it.
The sage and olive ground came from the garden itself: the colour of old leaves in warm shade, the colour that makes the pink and teal of the peacock more vivid than they have any right to be. The ornate border at the hem is the garden wall. The thing that holds the whole composition together and makes the wildness inside it feel intentional.
